Sentiment Analysis Premier League : A review of the 2018–19 season so far

Since the start of the English Premier League season on 10 August 2018, fans all over the world have had numerous opportunities to express their support or anger toward teams and players on social media.

Football fan’s typically react to the results of games, but also on the individual performance of football players. They send happy birthday and best recovery wishes to players. But they can also be furious at club owner’s at the end of the transfer season or if the player’s behaviour off the pitch is bad.

Betsentiment.com has collected since the beginning of the 2018–19 premier league season more than 1’841’061’000 tweets on all 20 teams and 316 players of the top english football competition.

If we measure popularity by the volume of tweets which contain either the clubs twitter username or hashtags (see List of English Premier League Team Hashtags on Twitter) the clear winner is Manchester United, followed by Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Interesting to note that Manchester City, although for long time in the first position of the premier league table, is not receiving as much attention.
